Editor's Rating

Going by the design, Active 2 has a more sophisticated design than the Gear S3 series. It looks more stylish and classier than the other two. Although, the Active 2 is available in two sizes; 44mm and 40mm, the 44mm which is more compact than the Gear S3, yet has a slightly larger 1.4inch display that allows you to see more at a glance. The Active 2 also weighs far less than the Gear S3s which are quite heavy, thus making it easier on the wrist especially for individuals that have a thin wrist, it’s also slimmer than the Gear S3.

Moreover, Samsung added more apps to Active 2 such as Youtube, Twitter, and the Mystyle app that makes it extremely easy to customize the watch face of the Active 2 to match what you’re wearing.

Instead of the physical rotating bezel on the Gear S3 and Galaxy Watch, Samsung opted for a digital rotating bezel on the Active 2. It all depends on which you prefer, some users really like the physical rotating bezel than the digital one. For me, I prefer the physical one, I like the boldness that comes with it which is why the Galaxy watch is my best Samsung watch so far.

The Active 2 is also a more durable smartwatch with Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ which is more durable and clearer than SR+.

As per battery life, the Gear S3 will keep you going for about 2 days on average with always-on display active, so also is the Active 2 which has about 2 days long battery life with light usage. There’s isn’t much difference in the battery life of these three.

Active 2 is equipped with a faster 1.15GHz processor compared to 1.0GHz of the Gear S3 which translates to improved performance. Moreover, it runs on a higher Tizen 4.0 operating system.

As per fitness tracking, Active 2 is a more comprehensive activity tracker than the Gear S3s, it features blood pressure monitoring and ECG tracking both of which were recently cleared in South Korea. Moreover, Samsung improved the heart rate sensor on the Active 2 with 8-LEDs which results in more sensitive and accurate tracking. On the flipside, you can expect any of these three to track your steps, calories, sleep, heart rate, and outdoor activities via the inbuilt GPS.

Conclusion

In final words, the Active 2 is a better smartwatch than the older Gear S3 smartwatches which are still some of the best on the market. Active 2 comes with improved hardware and software that makes it more advance, it’s slimmer and more compact while also being very lightweight. It also has more fitness tracking features that make it a more comprehensive tracker.

On the flipside, the Gear S3 Frontier and Classic are still some of the best smartwatches you can buy today. These two are very rugged as been confirmed by happy users. I personally don’t think an upgrade is necessary if you already own any of the Gear S3 duos, but if you’re considering getting a new Samsung smartwatch, the Active 2 is a better bargain or you can wait for the new Galaxy Watch expected in some months time.
